A diffuser is bought once and refilled many times. The refill is where the cost, the choice, and the flexibility of a diffuser actually live — which is why the refill is the part worth understanding before you buy one.
On a waterless diffuser, “refill” is simple: you add fragrance oil. On a cartridge-based diffuser, it means buying a sealed cartridge from the same brand. Same word, two very different habits.
What a refill actually is on a waterless diffuser
There is no water to refill
Cold-air diffusion atomizes fragrance oil into a fine mist rather than heating or evaporating water. With no water tank, there is no water to measure, top up, or empty at the end of the week. The only thing that runs down is the oil.
The refill is a bottle of oil, not a cartridge
On some diffusers the refill is a sealed cartridge made by the same brand. On an open system it is simply a bottle of fragrance oil you pour in yourself. That one difference decides how much freedom you have over scent, and how much the device costs to keep running.
Two kinds of refill systems
What a closed cartridge system locks in
Where the refill is a proprietary cartridge, the device and the scent travel together. The cartridge fits one brand’s unit, and the notes on offer are the ones that brand chooses. The refill is closer to a subscription than a purchase.
What an open oil system means
An open oil system separates the two halves. The diffuser is the diffuser; the oil is any compatible fragrance oil you choose. Nothing is keyed to a cartridge or tied to a plan. You buy oil when you run low, change the note when you want to, and stop when you stop using the unit.
AATOL is a waterless (cold-air) diffuser brand — no water tank, no heat, no dilution, and an open oil system with no proprietary cartridges. If you want the full picture of how the brand describes itself, read what AATOL is and what it is not.
Refills are standard 100 mL bottles of fragrance oil, and they fit any of the waterless units in the range — from the AURO A500 tower diffuser to the AURO A700. Browse them by mood in the fragrance oil range.

How refilling works, practically
Topping up the oil
Uncap the oil bottle and pour into the unit’s oil reservoir up to the marked level. There is nothing to mix, so the job is a single step. A fuller reservoir means fewer top-ups, not a stronger scent.
Changing scent
When you want a different note, you change the oil. Because the system is open, that means swapping the bottle, not hunting for a cartridge the brand has discontinued. It is worth keeping one or two bottles on hand rather than committing to a single scent year-round.
What to avoid
Do not add water or dilute the oil. Cold-air atomization is built to diffuse oil at full strength; water is precisely what this system is designed to leave out. Avoid mixing two oils in one reservoir if you want a clean single note later. Keep spare bottles upright, capped, and out of direct sun.
What to check when you compare refills
- Is the refill an oil bottle you pour, or a sealed cartridge you replace?
- Can you use any compatible fragrance oil, or only the brand’s own?
- Is there a subscription, or do you buy only when you run low?
- How is the reservoir filled, and how easily can you change the scent?
- How much oil does the reservoir hold, and how often will you top it?
The unit is the part you look at; the refill is the part you live with. A system where the refill is simply a bottle of oil keeps that in your hands.

Frequently asked questions
What is a waterless diffuser refill?
It is a bottle of fragrance oil. A waterless diffuser uses cold-air atomization, so there is no water tank to refill — the only consumable is the oil, which you pour into the unit’s reservoir.
How often do you refill a waterless diffuser?
It depends on the model’s reservoir size and how often the unit runs. A larger reservoir needs fewer top-ups; a smaller one is refilled more often. There is no water to change between refills, only oil to add.
Can you use any fragrance oil in a waterless diffuser?
On an open oil system, yes — you refill with any compatible fragrance oil rather than a proprietary cartridge. Cartridge-based diffusers restrict you to the brand’s own refills. AATOL uses an open system, so the oil you choose is your call.
Do you add water to a waterless diffuser?
No. Waterless (cold-air) diffusion atomizes oil directly. There is no water tank and no water to add; diluting the oil with water is not part of how the system works.
Do you need a subscription to refill an AATOL diffuser?
No. There is no plan and no proprietary cartridge. You buy a 100 mL fragrance oil bottle when you run low, and change the scent whenever you like.
Can you change the scent in a waterless diffuser?
Yes. On an open oil system you change scent by changing the oil, so you can move between notes by season or by room without replacing a cartridge or staying within one brand’s list.
